Northridge is where this company actually is
Most solar companies list a city because they will drive to it. This one is headquartered in it.
Cali Energy’s office is at 19201 Parthenia Street, Unit E, Northridge, CA 91324. The estimator who looks at your roof, the crew that mounts the rail and the electrician who ties into your main panel all work out of that address. For a Northridge homeowner the practical difference is small distances: a site visit does not need to be batched into a route across the county, a missing part is a short drive rather than a rescheduled day, and a service call years after the install goes to the same company that did the work.
It also means the local conditions here are not researched, they are routine — the LADWP interconnection queue, the LADBS e-permit path, the way 1950s and 1960s ranch houses in this part of the Valley were originally wired, and the summer load profile of a neighbourhood where air conditioning runs hard from June to September.

LADWP changes the math in Northridge
The single most important local fact — and the one generic Southern California solar pages get wrong for this neighbourhood.
Retail-rate net metering, not NEM 3.0
LADWP is a municipal utility, so the CPUC’s Net Billing Tariff — what everyone calls NEM 3.0 — does not apply here. Exported energy is still credited against the retail rate, which is the opposite of how Edison territory has worked since April 2023.
Systems are rated in CEC-AC
LADWP sizes interconnection in CEC-AC watts, not DC nameplate. A quote written only in DC can cross a threshold the homeowner never sees. Every Northridge design we submit is stated on the basis the utility actually reads.
Two approvals, not one
The city permit and the utility interconnection are separate tracks. LADBS signs off the installation; LADWP sets the net meter and issues the permission-to-operate email that lets the system run.
Battery economics differ here
Because exports still earn the retail rate, a Northridge battery is bought mainly for backup and resilience rather than to rescue export value — a genuinely different calculation from Altadena or Camarillo.

The battery incentive most Northridge homeowners miss
LADWP administers a state storage programme, and the qualifying route is income-based rather than first-come.
The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is a State of California initiative, and LADWP is one of its programme administrators — so an LADWP household can pursue funding toward solar and battery storage without the utility being CPUC-regulated. It is not open to everyone: the single-family route requires documentation that total household income is at or below 80% of Area Median Income, verified through recent federal tax filings submitted with the application. A separate multifamily route covers properties with at least five deed-restricted low-income rental units that also sit in a Disadvantaged Community under CalEnviroScreen, or where at least 80% of households are at or below 60% of AMI.
Two details are worth knowing before anyone builds a budget around it. First, applicants selected in LADWP’s lottery process are not automatically awarded funding. Second, following a CPUC ruling issued February 20, 2026, all SGIP administrators including LADWP must require additional cost-verification documents on projects reporting unusually high total eligible project costs; applications can be modified or cancelled as a result. We price a battery as though the incentive will not arrive, and treat an award as an improvement rather than a premise.

Systems that already exist: finishing one, or adding to one
Not every Northridge job starts with a bare roof. Two of the more common situations here have almost nothing written about them.
The installer who disappeared
It happens more than the industry admits: a contract signed, a deposit taken, then silence. Taking a project over means auditing what is physically installed, correcting anything that will not pass, and re-driving the permit and interconnection to approval. We have carried Northridge work through exactly that, including on a house whose storage was already in place.
Adding to a working array
Homeowners add load — an EV, a heat pump, an ADU — and want more panels rather than a new system. A capacity addition is its own design and its own utility step, not a bolt-on; one Northridge job here was a modest addition to an array that was already producing.
Inverters outlive their warranties
A string inverter is the part that usually fails first. Diagnosis, manufacturer warranty claims and replacement are ordinary work for us — including on systems we did not originally install.
Roof first, when the roof says so
If the covering is near the end of its life, doing the roof before the array avoids paying twice to remove panels later. Holding B, C-10 and C-39 means both scopes are priced and sequenced by one company.
What solar costs and how long it takes in Northridge
No honest flat price for a neighbourhood — but published ranges and a permit path that moves quickly.

That spread is the real answer: size follows electricity use, roof geometry and electrical capacity, not the neighbourhood name. For budgeting, two published price bases frame the range, both before incentives: $2.49 per watt at competitive marketplace rates (EnergySage, August 2026) and $3.5 per watt, the 2024 national median for cash purchases (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory). A 6–12 kW system therefore lands somewhere between roughly $15,000 and $42,000 depending on installer, financing and scope.

Permits: LADBS for the building, LADWP for the grid
Northridge is inside the City of Los Angeles, so both steps are city-run — and they are not the same step.
The express e-permit
LADBS issues qualifying residential rooftop solar through an online express permit, frequently the same day. It is the fastest part of the process and rarely the thing that holds a project up.
Structural attachment still matters
A quick permit is not a lighter standard. Attachment spacing, rafter capacity and flashing detail are inspected, and on 1950s and 1960s Valley framing the rafter layout decides the array layout.
Panel upgrades add scope
Older Northridge houses often still run a 100-amp main panel. Adding solar, a battery or an EV charger can push the service past it, and the upgrade is permitted and inspected as electrical work in its own right.
The utility step is separate
LADWP’s interconnection review, meter set and permission-to-operate email run on their own schedule after the building inspection. A system may be finished and still not legally allowed to run.
