EV charger installation in Los Angeles, sized to your panel

Cali Energy installs Level 2 EV chargers across Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, in Burbank, Glendale, Calabasas, Simi Valley and Santa Clarita, on their own or together with solar. We size the circuit to the charger, check what your main panel can carry, file the permit and wire it under our C-10 electrical license.

A Level 2 charger needs its own 240-volt circuit, and the electrical code sizes the breaker at 125% of the charger's current: a 32-amp charger takes a 40-amp breaker, and a 48-amp charger a 60-amp breaker with a hardwired connection. What decides the job is whether your main panel has room for that circuit, which a load calculation answers before anything is ordered. Cali Energy installs Level 2 chargers across Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley and handles the circuit, the panel and the permit; in Glendale we mounted a charger with the solar, and when the car arrived nearly three years later, one visit connected it.

When to call us

  • A new EV and no 240-volt circuit where the car parks.
  • Solar going in now. The crew, the trench and the panel are already open, so the charger goes in with the same work; in Glendale it went on the wall the day the solar was installed.
  • A main panel with no room for another large circuit. Main panel upgrades
  • A second car, or a charger in a detached garage.

What the circuit needs

Every Level 2 charger gets its own dedicated circuit, with the breaker rated at 125% of the charger's current. The charger's setting, the wire and the breaker are chosen together, and a 48-amp charger is hardwired. Circuit sizes and the 125% rule

How an EV charger installation runs

  1. Check. The main panel's rating and open positions, a load calculation for the house, and the route from the panel to the parking spot.
  2. Design. Charger setting, breaker and wire sized together; hardwired or a plug-in outlet where the charger allows it.
  3. Permit. In the City of Los Angeles an EV charger circuit is an express permit, including with a service upgrade up to 400 amps. Other cities have their own route, and we file it.
  4. Installation. Conduit, wire, breaker and charger, under our C-10 electrical license.
  5. Inspection and the permit closed.
  6. Rebates. In 2026 LADWP pays up to $1,000 toward a qualifying home charger and its installation, and up to $1,500 for Lifeline and EZ-SAVE customers. Current rebates

With solar, or on its own

A charger can go in on its own, or as part of a solar project. In Glendale the charger went on the wall beside the inverter on solar installation day with no car at the house yet; nearly three years later, putting it to use was a visit to connect it. In Northridge the same house came back to us after its solar for an EV charger and for service. How many panels it takes to charge an EV

Some solar inverters carry a built-in EV charger. In Granada Hills we replaced one; the charger lives in the same box as the inverter. Solar panel repair

What moves the price

  • The distance from the panel to the charger, and whether the run goes along a wall or in a trench to a detached garage.
  • Room in the main panel, or a subpanel or panel upgrade.
  • Hardwired or plug-in, and the charger you choose.
  • The permit your city requires.
