Roofing in Northridge, CA, from our office in Northridge
Cali Energy replaces and repairs roofs in Northridge, where our office is, under its C-39 roofing license. On three Northridge houses the roof came first, twenty-eight, thirty and thirty-one squares of composition shingle, and the array went onto the new covering after it.
Northridge's single-family homes have a median build year of 1958, 90.1% of the 10,887 were built before 1978, and LADBS issued 406 re-roof permits on one- and two-family homes here from January 2025 to May 2026. A full re-roof in Northridge falls under the City of Los Angeles cool-roof rule. Cali Energy replaced three Northridge roofs from 2020 to 2023 and put solar on each of them afterwards, so every one of those arrays went onto a new covering.

- The cool-roof rule. Northridge is in the City of Los Angeles, so a full re-roof needs a covering rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. The cool-roof rule
A cool roof first, then the array
On our 2023 Northridge project the roof was assessed on 2 February and the tear-off followed that month: thirty-one squares of old covering stripped, damaged sheathing replaced, and a shake-profile shingle laid in a cool-rated color, with 120 feet of ridge cap, drip edge, five low-profile vents and new step and valley flashing. Twenty-five modules went on in two blocks around the roof vents, each with its own microinverter, and the modules never touched the old covering.
A roof that waits for the solar
A new roof does not have to be followed by solar the same month. On one Northridge house we replaced twenty-eight squares in 2020 and designed the array onto the new covering the following spring; on another, thirty squares went on in 2022 and the array came a year later. Both roof permits were finaled before the solar was drawn. Roof replacement
Inspection by video
LADBS runs a remote video inspection program for solar work. Our 2021 and 2023 Northridge arrays both went through it; on the 2023 project the inspection was a scheduled fifteen-minute slot on 19 July, the city released the project the next day, and LADWP granted permission to operate on 26 July.

Thirty-one squares came off first. Then twenty-five modules went on.
Thirty-one squares torn off, damaged sheathing replaced and a cool-rated shake-profile shingle laid; twenty-five modules went on the new roof and were connected in October 2023.
Five quotes for the same roof. Then five years of coming back.
Twenty-eight squares of composition shingle in 2020, the permit finaled; the array followed the next spring and reached permission to operate on 14 May 2021.

Thirty squares of composition shingle in 2022, the permit finaled; a year later the array went on and reached permission to operate three weeks after the application.
