Solar questions from Los Angeles homeowners, answered

The questions we hear on the phone, answered from our own projects across Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley and from the rules of LADWP, Southern California Edison and the cities we work in. Each answer links to the page that goes deeper.

Most solar questions in Los Angeles come down to five things: what the system will cost for your house, how long the project takes with your city and utility, whether you need a battery, whether your main panel and roof are ready, and what happens after the switch-on. Cali Energy, a Northridge contractor with CSLB #1032379, answers each from its own installations and the rules that apply where you live.

Cost and payment

How much does solar cost in Los Angeles? It depends on the system size, which your usage and your roof decide, and on the roof material, the main panel and whether a battery is included. Every Cali Energy quote is built line by line after a site visit. What the official data shows about solar cost · Cost calculator for Los Angeles

When do I pay? California law caps the down payment at $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less; progress payments follow completed milestones; the final payment is due after the final inspection, the utility's permission and the switch-on. Payment terms on a Cali Energy project

Can I finance it? A loan, a lease and a power purchase agreement are three different things, and only a loan leaves you owning the system. Cash vs loan vs lease vs PPA

Timelines

How long does a solar project take? The installation is one or two days on site. The calendar is the permit and the utility: in Woodland Hills a complete application went from filing to permission to operate in ten days; in Simi Valley the city's automated permit approves qualifying systems in minutes, and SCE's interconnection took a median 44 days for the 962 residential systems approved since January 2025. What slows a project? An HOA approval left to the end, a main panel that cannot take the solar breaker, and a utility application with a field missing. Why solar inspections fail

Batteries

Do I need a battery? On Southern California Edison's Net Billing Tariff, exported solar earns far less than the power you buy back in the evening, so a battery does real work; on LADWP's retail-rate net metering it is mainly about backup. Of the residential systems SCE approved in Simi Valley from January 2025 to March 2026, 93.7% included a battery. Do you need a battery under NEM 3.0? · Home battery installation

Will a battery run my whole house? Only what fits within the battery's continuous output: a backup panel carries the chosen circuits, and the heaviest loads can stay on the grid. Whole home or critical loads

Are there battery rebates? Clean Power Alliance pays a Sun Storage Rebate of up to $2,250 in its member communities, and the state's SGIP, which covers SCE customers but not LADWP, takes 2026 applications only in its income-qualified tier. SGIP in 2026 · LADWP programs

The panel and the roof

Do I need a main panel upgrade? The code caps the main breaker plus the solar breaker at 120% of the busbar rating. When that does not fit, a derate of the main breaker or a panel with a bigger busbar solves it; in Tarzana the main went to 175 amps and the panel stayed. Main panel upgrades · 120% rule calculator

Should I replace the roof first? When the roof has less life left than the array. In Encino the roofing permit came first, 20 squares of Class A shingle went on, and the solar reached permission to operate 55 days after the roofing permit. Roof replacement · Replace your roof before solar?

Can solar go on a tile roof? Yes. On concrete tile the tile is lifted along the rail lines and reset; on clay tile the array footprint can be converted to shingle with the tile kept around it. Tile roof repair · Solar on clay tile roofs

What if the roof under my panels needs replacing later? The array comes off, the roof is rebuilt, and the same modules go back on new flashed attachments. Solar panel removal and reinstallation

Utilities, permits and HOAs

LADWP or SCE: does it matter? Yes. LADWP credits exports at the retail rate and runs its own storage review; SCE bills new solar under the Net Billing Tariff and brings PSPS shutoffs in fire weather. Burbank and Glendale have their own city utilities. Utility rules · Who is my electric utility?

Can my HOA stop me? California's solar rights law stops an association from banning a residential installation, but it still reviews the application and the city expects its letter. In Simi Valley the association's written approval was in hand three days after the plan set came back, before anything went to the city. Can an HOA stop you from going solar?

Does my new ADU need solar? Under California's Title 24, most new homes and many ADUs do. Does my new ADU need solar? · Solar for an ADU

After the switch-on

What does the warranty cover? The manufacturers' warranties on the equipment, 25 years on our workmanship from PTO, and 5 years on roof penetrations. Our warranties

My app shows zero. Is the system broken? Not necessarily. Before anyone is dispatched we read the monitoring history and the utility meter; in Woodland Hills eight days of silence turned out to be the home internet connection, and the visit was never needed. Solar panel repair

Do you service systems another company installed? Yes, starting from the system's paperwork and a diagnosis. In Northridge the array was sound and the service behind it was rebuilt before the utility granted permission to operate. When your installer has gone out of business
