When the roof has to come off first
The order of operations that decides whether you pay for the same work twice.
On the newest job here the original tile roof was stripped and re-decked to composition shingle before a single module was mounted. That is a decision worth understanding, because it is one of the few places a homeowner can genuinely lose money by getting the sequence wrong. A solar array is warrantied for around twenty-five years. If it goes onto a covering with five or ten years left, the roof will need replacing while the array is on it — which means paying to remove the system, redo the roof, and reinstall and recommission everything.
Because roofing is in-house under our C-39 licence, the roof condition is assessed by the trade that would have to replace it, and both scopes are quoted and scheduled together. There is no incentive to wave the question through, and no second contractor to blame for a penetration.
