Ten kilowatts is where the Granada Hills timeline changes

The single most useful thing to know before signing anything here — and the reason two neighbours can wait very different amounts of time.

LADWP runs two approval paths. A system that is under 10 kW CEC-AC with no battery and no main-panel upgrade qualifies for the fast track: interconnection approval in roughly 2–5 days and the meter set with authorization in another 1–2 weeks. Everything else — a battery, a panel upgrade, or a system from 10 to 30 kW — takes the standard path, which adds an engineering site visit of 1–3 weeks before approval even begins.

Granada Hills sits on the wrong side of that line more often than most Valley neighbourhoods, because the houses and lots are bigger and the electricity bills follow. Our recent work here illustrates it plainly: three systems switched on in 2025 came in at 13.38, 12.05 and 10.09 kW CEC-AC — every one of them above the fast-track ceiling. A smaller job the following year sat at 3.1 kW, comfortably inside it. Same utility, same neighbourhood, materially different schedules.

None of that is a reason to undersize a system. It is a reason to hear the real timeline before you sign, and to have the interconnection paperwork prepared for the correct path from day one rather than discovering the site visit exists after the panels are on the roof.

CEC-AC, not DC nameplate

The threshold is stated in CEC-AC watts. A proposal written only in DC can look under the line while the utility reads it as over.

Batteries move you across it

Adding storage puts a project on the standard path regardless of array size. Worth knowing when a battery is being considered late.

So does a panel upgrade

A main-panel upgrade has the same effect. If the service needs work anyway, plan the schedule around the longer route.

The roof is the short part

Installation is usually 1–3 days. Almost all of the calendar is approvals, which is exactly why the path matters.

Half-acre lots, outbuildings and the loads nobody counts

Granada Hills is not laid out like the rest of the Valley, and the design brief changes with it.

Part of Granada Hills falls inside a “K” equinekeeping district under the Los Angeles Municipal Code — a zoning designation created to preserve horsekeeping, where the minimum lot runs to 20,000 square feet, close to half an acre. Even outside the K district, lots here are generous by Valley standards and the properties come with things a tract house does not have: detached garages, workshops, barns and tack rooms, well and irrigation pumps, arena lighting, and sometimes a second dwelling.

Those change a solar design in three ways. The load is larger and less predictable than a bill alone suggests, which is part of why systems here run bigger. The electrical layout is spread out — subpanels in outbuildings, long runs, older service equipment — so what looks like a simple rooftop job can carry real electrical scope. And the roof options multiply: a barn or a detached garage may offer a cleaner, less shaded plane than the house itself. We survey the whole property rather than the main roof, and we say which structures are worth using before drawing anything.

Survey the property, not the house

Detached structures often carry the better plane. Worth knowing before the array is squeezed onto a shaded main roof.

Count the real loads

Pumps, workshop tools, arena lighting and an ADU all add up. Sizing follows the whole property’s consumption.

Long runs and subpanels

Spread-out electrical means conductor sizing and voltage drop matter. That scope belongs in the original quote.

Hillside parcels

Toward the north the terrain rises into fire-hazard designations, which affect access, equipment siting and scheduling.

LADWP still credits solar at the retail rate

The rule that makes Granada Hills a different proposition from an Edison neighbourhood ten miles away.

NEM 3.0 does not apply

LADWP is municipal, so the CPUC’s Net Billing Tariff does not govern it. Exports here are still credited against the retail rate rather than an hourly avoided-cost value.

Batteries are for resilience

Because exports hold their value, storage here is bought mainly for backup power rather than to rescue export economics — a genuinely different calculation from Simi Valley or Camarillo.

Two approvals, not one

LADBS signs off the installation; LADWP sets the net meter and issues the permission-to-operate email that lets the system run.

The city permit is quick

LADBS issues qualifying residential rooftop solar through an online express permit, frequently the same day. The utility side is what sets the pace.
