Living under the flight path does not stop you going solar
Van Nuys Airport is one of the busiest general-aviation fields in the country, and this question comes up on nearly every estimate here.
The worry is reasonable and the answer is straightforward: federal glare rules are aimed at solar built on airports, not at solar built on houses. The FAA’s policy covers proposed solar energy systems at federally obligated airports, and under the version adopted in 2021 the assessment focuses on whether an installation would create hazardous glare in the air traffic control tower — the earlier requirement to assess glare for pilots on approach was dropped. In practice, formal glare studies are a matter for large ground-mounted and commercial arrays near airports, highways and similar sightlines. A residential rooftop system does not trigger one.
It is also worth knowing what a modern module actually does with light. Panels are built to absorb sunlight rather than reflect it — that is the entire point — and the glass carries an anti-reflective coating precisely because every reflected photon is lost production. The reflectivity of a solar array is lower than that of ordinary window glass or a swimming pool.
So the practical constraints on a Van Nuys roof are the ordinary ones: usable planes, shade, roof condition and what the electrical service can carry. If your property is genuinely unusual — a large ground mount, or a commercial building right at the field boundary — we will say so and treat it accordingly, rather than pretending the question does not exist.

Older services, smaller lots
Two ordinary facts about Van Nuys housing that decide more about a project than the panel brand does.
Much of Van Nuys was built out in the post-war decades, when a house did not run an electric car, a heat pump, an air conditioner and a solar array off the same service. Older panels and 100-amp services are common, and solar feeds the same busbar the utility does — the code caps how much combined supply that busbar may take. So the service equipment gets assessed before the array is designed, and where an upgrade is needed it goes into the original proposal rather than appearing at inspection. It also matters for scheduling: a main-panel upgrade moves the project onto LADWP’s longer approval path.
The second fact is the lots. Parcels here are smaller than in the west Valley, and roofs are correspondingly tighter. That is why high-output modules earn their place — the 445 W panels on one job here put more capacity into the same area than a lower-wattage product would. Where the roof genuinely cannot carry what the bill needs, we say so and size to what is there instead of promising a number the property cannot deliver.
