Main panel upgrade in Van Nuys, CA
Cali Energy derates and replaces main electrical panels in Van Nuys when solar needs room. On one house a smaller main breaker let forty-two modules land on the existing 200-amp panel; on another the panel had no open position left, so the solar was connected through new service equipment.
A Van Nuys panel can take solar as long as its main breaker plus the solar breaker stay within 120% of the busbar rating. On a 200-amp busbar that limit is 240 amps: behind a 200-amp main, 40 amps are left for solar, and behind a main lowered to 175 amps, 65; on our 2022–2023 Van Nuys project that derate carried a 16.8 kW array with no service upgrade, and LADWP set the net meter ten weeks after the application. Where the panel has no free position, no derate helps, and Cali Energy, a licensed electrical and solar contractor (CSLB #1032379), designs the connection around new service equipment.

How a panel decision runs in Van Nuys
- The 120% rule. The busbar sets the limit: main breaker plus solar breaker may not exceed 120% of its rating, which is 240 amps on a 200-amp busbar. That leaves 40 amps for solar behind a 200-amp main and 65 behind a 175-amp one.
- A free position is the other half. A derate changes a number, not the space: the solar breaker still needs an open position, tandem breakers fit only where the panel is listed for them, and a subpanel needs its own feeder breaker in the main panel. Derate, new panel or service upgrade
- Postwar houses. Of the 20,423 single-family homes in Van Nuys's four ZIP codes on the LA County Assessor roll, 86.6% were built before 1960, and the median year is 1951.
- Four ZIP codes, several names. All four are postal Van Nuys, but most of 91406 lies in the Lake Balboa neighborhood council area and half of 91401 in Valley Glen's. On our 2022 project LADWP's notices named a different neighborhood from the mailing address, so we track each job by its work request.
Van Nuys panels we have derated or replaced
Forty-two modules, and the panel stayed where it was.
Forty-two modules, 16.8 kW, on the existing 200-amp panel after the main breaker was lowered to 175 amps; no service upgrade, and the net meter in the first week of February 2023.
The cheap fix needed two empty slots. There were none.
Every breaker position taken, so the 11.9 kW array was connected through new service equipment; LADWP approved the agreement two weeks after filing and set the net meter at the start of March 2022.
A derate that kept the panel
For a 16.8 kW array of forty-two modules on microinverters, on a two-story house roofed in concrete tile, the load calculation showed a 175-amp main would carry the house. We swapped in the 175-amp main breaker and put the solar breaker into the 200-amp panel that was already there, so nothing changed at the meter or on LADWP's side of the service, and the project needed no utility construction. LADWP set the net meter in the first week of February 2023, ten weeks after the application.
When the panel is full
On a large single-story Van Nuys house with an 11.9 kW array, every position in the main panel was in use, so no derate could help at any breaker size, and the positions listed for tandem breakers were taken too. We designed the connection around new service equipment with room for the house and the array. When LADWP's service representative wrote to the homeowner for photographs of the existing equipment, ours went in that week; the agreement was approved two weeks after filing, and the net meter went in at the start of March 2022. Panel upgrade questions for Van Nuys
Does Cali Energy do main panel upgrades in Van Nuys?
Yes. Cali Energy derates main breakers and installs new panels and service equipment in Van Nuys under its C-10 electrical license, with LADBS permits and LADWP's review; both Van Nuys projects below came down to that decision. CSLB #1032379, based in Northridge; call +1-323-844-7777.
Is a 200-amp panel enough for a large array?
On our 2022–2023 Van Nuys project it did: with the main breaker lowered to 175 amps, the 120% allowance rose from 40 to 65 amps and the existing panel stayed. Whether yours can is a licensed electrician's call from the busbar rating and a load calculation.
What if every breaker position is taken?
Then a derate does not help, because the solar breaker still needs a position. On our Van Nuys house with a full panel, the solar was connected through new service equipment, and LADWP set the net meter at the start of March 2022.
How long did LADWP take on these Van Nuys projects?
Ten weeks from the application to the net meter on the derate, and about six weeks on the new service equipment.
