Main panel upgrade in Granada Hills, CA

Cali Energy upgrades and derates main electrical panels in Granada Hills. On one Granada Hills house we replaced the service panel with a 225-amp busbar under a 200-amp main and left about 70 amps of backfeed headroom for what the house adds next; on another, a derate to 175 amps let thirty-one modules connect without replacing the panel.

In Granada Hills the busbar rating decides the connection, and we read it before designing anything. Where a derate works, the main breaker comes down, and in Los Angeles that derate needs its own electrical permit beside the solar one; on our 2025 Granada Hills project both finals were requested for one date and passed together on 29 December. Where the house needs more, the panel is replaced, as on our 2022 project, which reached permission to operate on 11 August 2022.

How a panel project runs in Granada Hills

  • The busbar first. The code caps the main breaker plus the solar breaker at 120% of the busbar rating. We check the busbar against the array's breaker before the panel is opened. Derate, new panel or service upgrade
  • A derate is its own permit. The solar permit does not cover a derate; it gets a separate electrical permit, and we request both finals for the same date.
  • The houses. Granada Hills' single-family homes have a median build year of 1959; 88.1% of the 13,843 were built before 1978.
  • LADWP sets the meter after the city's finals and grants permission to operate.

A derate, one visit for both finals

On our 2025 Granada Hills project thirty-one 445-watt modules on a string inverter needed a 60-amp solar breaker, and the main plus solar breaker came out over 120% of the busbar rating. Rather than replace the panel, the main breaker was derated to 175 amps. The derate went on a separate electrical permit, since the solar permit does not cover it; we requested the finals on both permits for a single date, and both passed on 29 December 2025.

A new panel with room left over

On our 2022 Granada Hills project we read the busbar rating before designing the connection and replaced the service panel with a 225-amp busbar under a 200-amp main. Fifteen modules went on fifteen microinverters, and the panel was left with about 70 amps of backfeed headroom for whatever the house adds next; a year later the owner came back to price a battery. The new panel went into an exterior wall with two different finishes, and we cut, fitted and closed the wall back across both.

Steps in Granada Hills

  1. Check. Panel label, busbar rating, main breaker and a load calculation against the array and anything planned after it.
  2. Derate or new panel, decided on the numbers.
  3. Permits with LADBS: the solar permit, and the electrical permit for the derate or the panel.
  4. Installation under our C-10 electrical license, the wall finished around a new panel.
  5. Finals on one date where possible, then LADWP's meter and permission to operate.

Panel upgrade questions for Granada Hills

Does Cali Energy do main panel upgrades in Granada Hills?

Yes. Cali Energy replaces and derates main panels in Granada Hills under its C-10 electrical license, with LADBS permits and LADWP's meter work. CSLB #1032379, based in Northridge, next to Granada Hills; call +1-323-844-7777.

Does a derate need a separate permit?

Yes. In Los Angeles the solar permit does not cover a derate of the main breaker, so it gets its own electrical permit. On our 2025 Granada Hills project both finals passed on the same visit.

Should a new panel be bigger than the solar needs?

It can be worth it. On our 2022 Granada Hills project the new 225-amp busbar under a 200-amp main left about 70 amps of headroom, and a year later the owner priced a battery against it.

Will the wall be repaired after a panel change?

Yes. On our 2022 Granada Hills project the new panel went into a wall with two different exterior finishes, and we cut, fitted and closed the wall back across both.
