The fastest, cheapest, worst way to mount on tile is to drill a stanchion right through the face of a tile and caulk around it. Tile isn't a waterproof layer — it sheds water to the underlayment beneath. A bolt through the tile relies on sealant that will dry out and crack, and it leaves the tile itself split around the hole. Here's the part most homeowners miss: on a tile roof, the tile is not what keeps you dry. Tile is the sunshade and the good looks. So a watertight solar penetration isn't about caulk on top — it's about the flashing directing water onto the underlayment and the underlayment being intact where the bracket goes through. A good installer lifts tile, seats a flashed base or hook into the rafter, and uses a self‑sealing membrane (rubberized asphalt) around the fastener so it seals around the shaft. A poor installer trusts a bead of sealant on the tile face. Both look fine on day one; only one is still dry in year eight.
Check the underlayment before you install
