Roofing in Encino, CA: re-roofs that carry the solar after them
Cali Energy replaces and repairs roofs in Encino under its C-39 roofing license. On two Encino houses twenty and thirty squares of Class A composition shingle went on before the array, on a third the roofing and solar permits were issued the same day, and on a fourth a concrete tile roof took a 12.3 kW array with the tile reset over every mount.
Encino's single-family homes have a median build year of 1956, and LADBS issued 286 re-roof permits on one- and two-family homes here from January 2025 to May 2026. A re-roof in Encino falls under the City of Los Angeles cool-roof rule, and when solar is planned, the order decides what the next twenty years cost: the roof first under its own permit, then the array. Cali Energy has run the roof and the solar together on three Encino houses, and each system went into service on its new roof.

Encino roofs
- Mid-century houses. Median build year 1956; 60.1% of Encino's 10,275 single-family homes were built before 1960.
- Re-roofs are routine here. LADBS issued 286 re-roof permits on one- and two-family homes in Encino from January 2025 to May 2026. How often LA roofs get replaced
- Shingle and tile. Our Encino jobs run from Class A composition shingle on single-story hip roofs to concrete S-tile.
- The cool-roof rule. Encino is in the City of Los Angeles, so a full re-roof needs a covering rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. The cool-roof rule
Roof first, then the array
Modules last decades; a shingle covering with a few years left does not. Putting an array on it means paying later to take the modules off, re-roof, and put them back with new flashings at every mount. On our 2021 Encino project the roofing permit was issued on 16 September, the material was ordered the next day, and the interconnection application went in only once the new covering was on; the net meter was set on 10 November. On another Encino house thirty squares went on in December and the array followed in January. Solar removal and reinstallation
Two permits, one contract
Roofing and solar travel on separate permits with separate inspections. Run under one contractor, they do not have to add up in sequence: on our 2019 Encino project the interconnection application was filed first, the roofing and solar permits were issued on the same day, and permission to operate came twenty-eight days after the application, on 30 December.
Tile under an array
Concrete tile is brittle once it has aged, and every mount on a tile roof means a tile lifted, a flashed bracket fixed to the rafter, and the tile set back. On our 2025 Encino tile project the estimate carried 150 replacement tiles as a line of its own from the start, and after start-up we walked both planes and secured the tile on the lower roof. Encino roofs we have worked on
The roof went on first, and that was the whole decision.
Twenty squares of Class A composition shingle over the existing sheathing, roofing permit first; the array followed and permission to operate came on 10 November 2021.
Same modules, same roof, different plan set.
Thirty squares of Class A composition shingle under a December roofing permit; the array went on in January and passed its final on the first visit.
Thirty modules on concrete tile, and what tile costs.
A concrete S-tile roof under a 12.3 kW array: 150 replacement tiles priced in from the first estimate, tile reset over flashed mounts, both planes walked after start-up.
How a roofing job runs in Encino
- Inspection. The covering, the deck where it can be seen, flashings at every penetration, and the attic ventilation.
- Written scope. Squares, underlayment, flashings, vents and the decking terms, line by line.
- LADBS roofing permit, with the solar permit alongside it when an array is planned.
- Tear-off and new roof under our C-39 license, with the cool-roof covering the city requires.
- Inspection and final, then the array on new flashed attachments when solar is part of the job.
