Main panel upgrade in Encino, CA
Cali Energy upgrades and derates main electrical panels in Encino for solar and batteries. A new service panel with a 225-amp busbar carried twenty-seven modules and a battery where the old panel stopped at thirteen; a derate to 175 amps let a 12.3 kW array onto a tile roof without replacing the panel.
Encino's houses are mostly mid-century: the median single-family home was built in 1956, and 60.1% of the 10,275 date from before 1960. On each of the three Encino projects below, the existing service could not take the planned array as it stood: one got a new panel, one a derate, and on the third the service work went through on its own permit at the final. In Los Angeles the panel work is permitted by LADBS, a derate travels on its own electrical permit, and LADWP connects the result. Cali Energy carried all three to permission to operate.

Why the panel comes up first in Encino
- The age of the houses. Median build year 1956; 86.7% of Encino's single-family homes were built before 1978.
- The 120% rule. The code caps the main breaker plus the solar breaker at 120% of the busbar rating. When the array's breaker pushes the sum over, the main breaker comes down or the panel is replaced. Derate, new panel or service upgrade
- Batteries add to the backfeed. A battery feeds the busbar too: on our 2022 Encino project the combined solar and storage backfeed was 70 amps, and the new panel was built around it.
- Two agencies. LADBS permits the panel and the derate; LADWP sets the meter and grants permission to operate.
Derate or a new panel
On our 2025 tile project the array exceeded what the existing busbar could take alongside the utility supply. We presented the derate and the panel replacement as separate options with their costs; the main breaker was derated to 175 amps, and the building final passed twelve days after installation started. On our 2022 battery project a derate was not enough: the old panel could carry thirteen modules, the design called for twenty-seven and a battery, so we built a new service panel with a 225-amp busbar. The house has more room than it uses, and the backfeed calculation sits clear of the limit.
Service work is its own permit
A smaller main breaker or a new panel is service work, and in Los Angeles it travels on its own electrical permit rather than on the solar one. On our 2023 Encino project the service work for the new solar load went on its own electrical permit and closed with the final, and LADWP granted permission to operate 23 days after the interconnection application, which we had filed the same day we requested the final.
Encino panels we have upgraded or derated
Thirty modules on concrete tile, and what tile costs.
A 12.3 kW array that exceeded the busbar limit; the main breaker was derated to 175 amps instead of replacing the panel, and the first twelve months produced 17,388 kWh.
Encino: a battery six inches from its interconnect device, approved the same day.
The old panel could carry thirteen modules; a new service panel with a 225-amp busbar took twenty-seven and a battery, with permission to operate on 25 May 2022.
Encino: twenty-three days from application to permission to operate.
Service work for the new solar load carried on its own electrical permit and closed with the final; permission to operate 23 days after the application.
How a panel project runs in Encino
- Check. Panel label, busbar rating, main breaker and a load calculation, against the array and any battery planned.
- Options priced. Where a derate works, we price it next to a new panel so you choose with the numbers in front of you.
- Permits with LADBS: the solar permit and the electrical permit for the panel or the derate.
- LADWP application filed early, so the utility's review runs alongside construction.
- Installation under our C-10 electrical license.
- Final, release and meter: the city signs off, LADWP sets the net meter and grants permission to operate.

Panel upgrade questions for Encino
Does Cali Energy do main panel upgrades in Encino?
Yes. Cali Energy has replaced a service panel and derated a main breaker on Encino projects, from a new 225-amp busbar behind a battery system to a 175-amp derate under a tile array, with LADBS permits and LADWP's review, under its C-10 electrical license. CSLB #1032379, based in Northridge, a short drive from Encino; call +1-323-844-7777.
Is a derate enough, or do I need a new panel?
It depends on the busbar, the size of the array and whether a battery is coming. Under a 12.3 kW array in Encino a derate to 175 amps was enough; for twenty-seven modules and a battery on another Encino house, a new panel with a 225-amp busbar was the answer. We price both where both work.
Does a derate need its own permit in Los Angeles?
Yes. A derate is service work with its own electrical permit, separate from the solar permit. On our 2023 Encino project the service work was carried on its own permit and closed with the final.
Can my Encino panel take a battery as well as solar?
A battery adds its own backfeed to the busbar, so the panel is sized for both. On our 2022 Encino project a new service panel with a 225-amp busbar took a combined 70-amp solar and storage backfeed, and the house has run with battery backup since May 2022.
