Roofing in North Hollywood, CA: tear-offs on houses from the 1940s

Cali Energy replaces and repairs roofs in North Hollywood under its C-39 roofing license. Four North Hollywood tear-offs, from eighteen to twenty-eight squares: three under new solar and one with no solar at all.

North Hollywood's single-family homes have a median build year of 1948, and 88.8% of the 14,748 date from before 1960. LADBS issued 351 re-roof permits on one- and two-family homes in North Hollywood from January 2025 to May 2026. On one of our North Hollywood tear-offs the whole deck was replaced with 57 sheets of OSB; on another, 170 feet of fascia and twelve sheets of plywood were replaced where the tear-off found rot, and the array went on the finished roof.

North Hollywood roofs

  • Houses from the 1940s. Median build year 1948; 94.5% of North Hollywood's single-family homes were built before 1978.
  • The deck decides the price. On a roof this age the sheathing and fascia are the unknowns. We state the decking terms in the quote, before the old covering comes off, so rot found during the tear-off is priced by rules you agreed to.
  • A busy re-roof market. LADBS issued 351 re-roof permits on one- and two-family homes in North Hollywood from January 2025 to May 2026. How often LA roofs get replaced
  • The cool-roof rule. North Hollywood is in the City of Los Angeles, so a full re-roof needs a covering rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. The cool-roof rule

A re-roof quoted line by line

Most of a re-roof is invisible once it is finished, which is why two quotes are hard to compare by the headline number. On our 2023 North Hollywood re-roof with no solar on it, the scope was written as quantities: eighteen squares of architectural shingle, 57 sheets of 7/16-inch OSB for a new deck, synthetic underlayment, 120 feet of ridge cap, 22 pieces of drip edge, each flashing by size and five low-profile vents. We priced that list with two suppliers before quoting, and the roof was built to it. A roof, and nothing else

Roofs under new arrays

  • Twenty-eight squares, then forty-two modules. The tear-off went through LADBS in the middle of June 2023, the roof was replaced the following week, and the array went on at the start of July, with the main panel upgraded in the same job.
  • Five faces, one roof. Eighteen squares with seven vents, the rotten fascia and plywood replaced, and seventeen modules spread across five orientations, each on its own microinverter.
  • A builder's project. A house converted to an ADU behind a new two-story dwelling: twenty-one squares with step and roof-to-wall flashing, the material delivered onto the roof past the construction site, and the array carried to permission to operate in March 2026.

How a re-roof runs in North Hollywood

  1. Inspection of the covering, the flashings and the deck from the attic.

  3. LADBS roofing permit, with the solar permit alongside when an array is planned.
  4. Tear-off to the sheathing, deck repairs as found, new underlayment, flashings, vents and cool-rated covering under our C-39 license.
  5. Inspections and final, then the array on new flashed attachments if solar is part of the job.

Roofing questions for North Hollywood

Does Cali Energy do roofing in North Hollywood?

Yes. Cali Energy replaces and repairs roofs in North Hollywood under its C-39 roofing license, with the LADBS permit and inspections: four North Hollywood tear-offs from eighteen to twenty-eight squares, three of them under new solar. CSLB #1032379, based in Northridge; call +1-323-844-7777.

Do you replace roofs without solar?

Yes. Roofing is a service of its own. Our 2023 North Hollywood re-roof had no solar on it: a new deck, eighteen squares of architectural shingle and five vents, built to the line-by-line scope the owner accepted.

What happens if the tear-off finds rotten wood?

The rot terms are in the quote before the work starts, and damaged wood is replaced as found. On one North Hollywood roof that meant 170 feet of fascia and twelve sheets of plywood, priced and replaced before the new covering went on.

Do you work with builders and ADU projects?

Yes. A builder brought us a North Hollywood house converted to an ADU: we re-roofed it, installed the array and carried an interconnection covering both dwellings on the lot to permission to operate.
