A re-roof quote is difficult to compare between contractors because most of it is invisible: what goes under the shingle, how many vents, what flashing, whether damaged wood is included or extra. The way to compare two quotes is line by line, not by the headline number.

The story
No array on this one. What follows is a roofing scope printed in full, because roofing quotes are among the hardest things a homeowner is ever asked to compare and almost nobody publishes a real one.
The scope was a full tear-off across roughly eighteen hundred and fifty square feet: strip the old covering, install new sheathing, lay the new roof, and remove and replace any rotten wood found along the way.
What went on it: eighteen squares of architectural shingle in an aged chestnut colour. Two rolls of synthetic underlayment. Fifty-seven sheets of seven-sixteenths oriented strand board for the deck. A hundred and twenty feet of eight-inch ridge cap. Twenty-two pieces of two-by-two drip edge metal. Flashing in three sizes — three at two inches, two at an inch and a half, three at four inches. Two T-tops, one at seven inches and one at four. Five low-profile roof vents. Silicone, cap nails, coil nails, framing nails, and a thirty-yard skip.
That list is the whole point. A quote that says re-roof and gives a number tells you nothing you can check. A quote that names the underlayment, counts the vents and says whether the plywood is included lets you put two contractors side by side and see where they differ — and they will differ, usually on the parts nobody looks at.
Three lines in particular are worth reading carefully on any roofing quote.
The sheathing. A new deck under the covering is not automatic; some quotes assume the existing boards are fine and price accordingly. If the old deck turns out to be soft, that is a change order on the day rather than a number you agreed. Here it was in the scope from the start, as a count — fifty-seven sheets — which is the form you want it in. A quote that says new sheathing as included without a quantity has not committed to anything.
The rot clause. Damaged wood is almost always excluded or priced separately, because nobody can see it until the covering is off. What matters is that the quote says so plainly and says how it will be priced, rather than leaving it to a conversation on the roof with the old shingle already in the skip.
The vents. Five low-profile vents is a specification, not a detail. Ventilation is what stops a roof cooking its own underside, and it is the first thing to quietly disappear from a cheap quote.
For context on the building: no solar permit, no interconnection, no utility involvement of any kind. Just a covering at the end of its life on a house that had already had its garage and patio cover removed and a laundry added under earlier permits.
If you are collecting roofing quotes, ask every contractor for the same itemisation. The one who will not give it to you is telling you something.

How do I compare roofing quotes?
Line by line. Ask every contractor to itemise the same things: squares of shingle, underlayment type and quantity, ridge cap, drip edge, flashing sizes and counts, vents, and whether new sheathing and rot replacement are included. Headline numbers are not comparable; itemised ones are.
Is new sheathing included in a re-roof?
