Roofing in Santa Clarita, CA: tile, shingle and roofs under solar

Cali Energy repairs and replaces roofs in Santa Clarita under its C-39 roofing license and, with C-10 electrical as well, builds the roof and the solar as one project. On our Santa Clarita whole-home battery project three layers of shingle came off about thirty squares under their own permit before the array went on, and the first winter's rain found no leak anywhere in the new roof.

Santa Clarita is a tile town: flat concrete, shake-profile and clay S-tile sit on most homes we work on here, with composition shingle on the rest. Tile outlasts its underlayment, so the common job is a lift-and-relay with new underlayment and flashings under the same tile; a shingle roof near the end of its life is torn off and rebuilt before solar goes on. Cali Energy roofs Santa Clarita homes under its C-39 license, permits the roof alongside the array, and on our 2024 project tore off three layers of shingle over about thirty squares before 28 modules and four battery units went in.

Santa Clarita roofs

  • Tile on most homes we work on. Flat concrete, shake-profile and clay S-tile, on housing with a median build year of 1989. On 23 of our 34 Santa Clarita solar projects the roof was tile. What 23 Santa Clarita tile-roof projects show
  • Underlayment, not tile. Tile can last fifty years or more; the underlayment under it fails first. A leaking tile roof here is lifted, relaid over new underlayment and flashings, and keeps its look. Tile roof repair
  • Shingle before solar. Where a shingle roof is near the end of its life, it comes off before the array goes on. On our 2024 Santa Clarita project three layers of shingle came off about thirty squares under a re-roof permit first.
  • Fire-hazard terrain. Much of the valley sits in or beside high fire-hazard terrain, so a new covering is a Class A assembly. Roof fire class, hazard zones and solar
  • Heavy roofs and big arrays. On a 17.2 kW tile-roof project here, plan check asked whether the structure carried the load, and a licensed structural engineer's calculations went into the set.

Permits

Inside the city, the City of Santa Clarita Building & Safety issues the re-roof permit, and qualifying solar, storage and panel permits are issued instantly online. Stevenson Ranch, Castaic, Agua Dulce and Val Verde are unincorporated and go through LA County Public Works. On our 2024 project the re-roof ran under its own permit, the array under the solar permit, and the fire department reviewed the storage separately. Re-roof permit rules across LA-area cities
