Tile roof replacement, relay or rebuild, planned around your solar

Cali Energy replaces and rebuilds tile roofs across Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, in Burbank, Glendale, Calabasas, Simi Valley and Santa Clarita. We relay sound tile over new underlayment, change the covering where the tile is done, and convert only the area under a solar array to shingle while the tile stays everywhere else. Roofing under our C-39 license, solar under C-10.

Replacing a tile roof has three paths. When the tile is sound, the roof is rebuilt underneath it and the same tile is relaid. When the tile is done or too heavy for the plan, the covering changes. When solar is going on, the tile can come off only inside the array footprint, which becomes a shingle field for the mounts, with the original tile reinstated around it. Cali Energy has built relays and footprint conversions across the San Fernando Valley and in Glendale.

Tile and solar on the same roof

Clay tile cracks under foot traffic and around mounting feet, so a tile roof needs a plan before solar goes on. In Glendale the array footprint became a shingle field, the tile stayed on every slope and edge around it, and the modules went on standard flashed feet. In Reseda the homeowner's own roofer converted the footprint to a layout we supplied, frozen before the roofer started, because the layout defines the patch. In Chatsworth seventeen squares were converted, with synthetic underlayment and shingle under the array and the original tile reinstated around it. Solar on clay tile roofs

How a tile replacement runs

  1. Inspection. Tile condition, underlayment, flashings and the structure, from the roof and the attic.
  2. Choose the path. Relay, new covering or footprint conversion, in a written scope.
  3. Permit with LADBS or your city. Re-roof permit rules across LA-area cities
  4. Tile off and stacked where it will be reused.
  5. New underlayment and flashings, sheathing replaced where damaged.
  6. Covering on: relaid tile, new covering, or shingle under the array with tile around it.
  7. Final inspection, and with solar, the utility's permission to operate.

Tile roof replacement questions

Does Cali Energy replace tile roofs in Los Angeles?

Yes. Cali Energy rebuilds and replaces clay and concrete tile roofs across Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, in Burbank, Glendale, Calabasas, Simi Valley and Santa Clarita: relay over new underlayment, a change of covering, or a shingle footprint under solar with the tile kept around it. C-39 roofing, CSLB #1032379, based in Northridge; call +1-323-844-7777.

Can I keep my tile and still get a new roof underneath?

Yes, when the tile is sound. In Canoga Park every tile came off, the underlayment, valleys, drip edge, vents and pipe flashings were renewed, and the same tile went back.

Can solar go on a tile roof without losing the tile look?

Yes. In Glendale and Chatsworth the tile came off only under the array, shingle went down for the mounts, and the original tile was reinstated around it, so the house still reads as a tile roof.

Does replacing part of a tile roof need a permit?

Re-roofing is permitted work with LADBS and the cities around it, and with solar the project also runs through the utility's interconnection. Our Glendale tile conversion passed its final inspection, and the utility issued permission to operate seven days later.
