Is Stone-Coated Steel Roofing Worth It? LA Guide
It can be, for the right house. Stone-coated steel is steel sheet coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy and finished with stone granules in acrylic, pressed into panels that look like tile, shake or shingle. DECRA, whose documents this page uses, lists its panels at 150 to 160 pounds per square installed, about a sixth of a standard concrete tile roof; rates every profile Class 4 for impact under UL 2218; and backs them with a lifetime limited warranty covering leaks, blow-off in winds up to 120 mph and penetration by hailstones up to 2.5 inches. The catch in Los Angeles is fire. Under DECRA's ICC-ES evaluation report, its direct-to-deck panels earn Class A only over a specific fire-resistant underlayment or a gypsum barrier board; over ordinary underlayment, the same roof rates Class C. Whether it's worth it depends on what you need the roof to do.

How it compares
Here it is next to concrete and clay tile, which it can replace at a fraction of the weight, and next to architectural shingles.
| Stone-coated steel (DECRA) | Concrete tile (Eagle) | Clay tile (MCA) | Architectural shingle (CertainTeed Landmark) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Installed weight per square | 150 to 160 lb | 900 to 970 lb; 570 to 720 lb lightweight | 788 to 1,008 lb | 211 to 225 lb |
| Impact rating (UL 2218) | Class 4, every profile | Not listed in the documents used here | Not listed in the documents used here | Class 3 |
| Fire rating | Class A, B or C depending on the assembly under it (direct-to-deck report) | Class A depends on the listed assembly | Class A depends on the listed assembly | Class A |
| Minimum slope | 3:12; 4:12 for Shingle XD | 2½:12 under the code | 2½:12 under the code | 2:12 under the code, with extra underlayment below 4:12 |
| Maker's warranty | Lifetime limited; labor and materials for the first 20 years | Limited lifetime | 50-year limited | Lifetime limited; 10 years of full coverage |
A square is 100 square feet of roof, so DECRA's 150 pounds is 1.5 pounds per square foot. The tile and shingle figures are the same makers' documents used in clay vs concrete roof tile and shingle brands compared.
What it's made of and how it goes on
DECRA's panels are steel with an aluminum-zinc hot-dip coating, an acrylic primer and basecoat, ceramic-coated stone granules and an acrylic over-glaze. The profiles imitate other roofs: Villa Tile and Tile imitate clay tile, Shake and Shake XD wood shake, and Shingle XD an architectural shingle. They're installed either on wood battens or directly to the deck, and each method has its own ICC-ES evaluation report: ESR-2901 for the batten systems and ESR-1754 for direct-to-deck. All the profiles need at least a 3:12 slope, Shingle XD at least 4:12.
Fire: the underlayment decides the class
Fire rating is a property of the whole assembly, not of the panel, and stone-coated steel shows it more plainly than most roofs: DECRA's direct-to-deck report, reissued in November 2025, gives the same panels three different classes depending on what's under them.
| Assembly under the panels | Fire class |
|---|---|
| GAF VersaShield fire-resistant roof deck protection, mechanically fastened | Class A |
| ½-inch gypsum board or ¼-inch DensDeck roof board, plus a UL-classified underlayment | Class A |
| Two layers of No. 30 felt (ASTM D226, Type II) | Class B |
| Any UL-classified underlayment alone | Class C |
A Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone requires a Class A roof, and in the City of Los Angeles the express re-roof permit covers a Class A or B covering, so the underlayment line on the estimate matters as much as the panel. Ask for the evaluation report and the assembly number the roof will be built to; the Class A roof rating explains how to read a listing, and fire-resistant roofing in Los Angeles covers the other fire details, such as vents and gutters. Whether your address is in a zone is in check your fire hazard severity zone.
Panels laid on battens, or shaped so they stand off the deck, leave an air space under the covering. Where California's wildland-urban interface code applies, that calls for a 72-lb cap sheet over a wood deck or a listed underlayment tested in a Class A assembly, with bird stops at the eaves where the profile allows (CWUIC 504.2.1); the details are in California's WUI roofing requirements.
Weight, tile and the permit
At about 1.5 pounds per square foot, stone-coated steel is well under the 6-pound line for the City of Los Angeles's express re-roof permit, as long as the assembly makes it a Class A or B covering; the permit routes are in do you need a permit to replace a roof in Los Angeles. Taking off a concrete tile roof of 900 pounds or more per square and putting on stone-coated steel takes most of that load off the framing. It still won't do everywhere: in a historic district, a preservation plan may call for clay to be replaced with clay, as Spanish tile roof care and replacement explains, and homeowners associations set their own rules on materials and looks; see HOA roof rules in California.
If more than half the roof is replaced, California's cool-roof rule can apply; DECRA's specification sheet says its cool colors meet California's Title 24, so pick from those where the rule applies. The rule itself is in the cool-roof requirement on a re-roof.
What the warranty covers
DECRA's warranty, now issued by IKO Metals USA, in its October 2025 version covers the original owner of a single-family detached house for as long as they own it. It pays when a manufacturing defect causes leaks, blow-off of panels in winds up to 120 mph, or hailstones of 2.5 inches or less going all the way through the roof:
- Years 1 to 20: the reasonable cost of labor and materials to repair or replace the defective components.
- Years 21 to 40: materials only, prorated by 1/600 for each month since installation.
- Year 41 on: 20% of the materials cost.
The surface finish has the same schedule for coating loss that substantially spoils the roof's look from the ground, but normal weathering, minor granule loss and fading are excluded. So is damage from improper installation, improper foot traffic, and cleaning products or coatings DECRA hasn't approved in writing. The warranty can be transferred once, within the first 20 years, with notice within 30 days of the sale. How manufacturer warranties fit with a contractor's workmanship warranty is in roofing warranties explained.
Living with it
DECRA's homeowner manual marks where to step on each profile, and the warranty excludes damage from improper foot traffic. For cleaning, it says not to use copper- or iron-based products, because copper speeds corrosion of the panels and iron stains them, and not to use water pressure above 500 psi or anything that strips the stone granules.
Is it worth it for your house?
- It fits well when a heavy tile roof is being replaced and the framing can't or shouldn't carry tile again, when you want a tile or shake look at shingle-like weight, or when wind and hail coverage matter to you.
- Check first whether the house is in a fire hazard severity zone, and if so get the Class A assembly in writing; whether a historic district or HOA limits the look; and whether the re-roof needs a cool color.
- Compare it with the alternatives on the same roof: new tile, a lift-and-relay of the existing tile, shingles, or other metal such as standing seam, covered in standing seam vs exposed-fastener metal roofs.
