Solar panel installation in Panorama City, CA

Cali Energy installs solar panels in Panorama City, where most houses went up in the postwar years. On three of our four projects here the existing service stayed as it was, and one system was switched on 38 days after we sent the proposal.

Panorama City is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles: LADBS handles the permits and inspections, and LADWP the interconnection and the net meter. On our 2021 Panorama City project LADWP granted permission to operate on 6 January 2022, 38 days after the proposal, and on a 2022 project 29 days after we filed. Cali Energy, a licensed solar company (CSLB #1032379), runs the permit and the utility side in parallel and installs the panels.

Panorama City homes

  • A planned postwar neighborhood. In ZIP code 91402, 88.1% of the 5,534 single-family homes on the LA County Assessor roll were built before 1960; the median year is 1950.
  • Inside the City of Los Angeles. Permits and inspections are LADBS, and the utility is LADWP.
  • Re-roofs. LADBS issued 110 re-roof permits for houses and duplexes in the Panorama City neighborhood council area between January 2025 and May 2026. Roofing
  • Services kept. On three of our four Panorama City houses the existing service stayed as it was, and the solar equipment went on the wall beside it.

Panorama City: switched on 38 days after the proposal.

24 modules on microinverters and the existing 200-amp meter-main kept; installed on 6 December 2021, all 24 reporting that afternoon; LADWP's permission to operate followed on 6 January 2022.

Permit and utility in parallel

On our 2021 Panorama City project we filed with LADWP on 1 December, two days after the proposal, paid its recovery charge the next morning and requested the city inspection on 3 December. The 24 modules were installed on 6 December; the following day LADWP confirmed the application, waived its site visit and granted permission to install, and the net meter was set on 6 January 2022, 38 days from the proposal. Photographs instead of a site visit

For nine modules on a low-slope Panorama City roof, we filed with LADWP on 2 May 2022 and put together the utility's photograph package the same day, so the pictures matched the system as built. LADWP cleared the site assessment from them and approved the installation four days later, with no correction from either agency, and the net meter went in on 31 May. Solar with LADWP

Old Panorama City services, and two on one wall

On a 2025 house the service on the wall had been there for decades, but the array did not call for a service upgrade, so the combiner and disconnect were mounted beside the existing equipment. On a 2024 property two separate services share one exterior wall, and which of them the array would feed was settled before the design was drawn. Main panel upgrades

Panorama City questions

Does Cali Energy install solar panels in Panorama City?

How quickly can a Panorama City system be switched on?

On our projects: 38 days from the proposal to permission to operate in 2021–2022, and 29 days from the LADWP filing in 2022.

Does a postwar service have to be replaced for solar?

Not on three of our four Panorama City houses, where the solar went in beside the existing service, including a 200-amp meter-main kept as it was. A licensed electrician confirms it for your house from the panel rating and a load calculation.

Did LADWP send someone to the site?

Not on our 2021 and 2022 projects: in 2021 LADWP waived its site visit, and in 2022 it cleared the site assessment from the photographs we sent.

Can solar go on a low-slope Panorama City roof without a tilted frame?

On our 2022 project, yes: nine modules sat close to horizontal on feet on the low-slope roof, and neither a tilted frame nor a structural calculation was needed.

Planning solar in Panorama City?

A photo of the service on the outside wall, meter and panel together, and a recent LADWP bill are all we need to start. On three of our four Panorama City houses the service took the solar as it was; the photo tells us whether yours can before the design is drawn.
