Roofing in Canoga Park, CA: shingle, low-slope and flat tile

Cali Energy replaces and repairs roofs in Canoga Park under its C-39 roofing license. On three Canoga Park houses: forty-two squares of shingle before a new array, a cool-rated grey shingle with two low-slope torch-down sections and no solar at all, and twenty-six squares of flat concrete tile lifted and reset over new underlayment.

Canoga Park's single-family homes have a median build year of 1960, and LADBS issued 109 re-roof permits on one- and two-family homes here from January 2025 to May 2026. A full re-roof in Canoga Park falls under the City of Los Angeles cool-roof rule, which decides the color as much as the product. On our 2024 Canoga Park re-roof no grey in the first shingle line cleared the reflectance threshold, so we moved to a cool-rated line in the grey the owner wanted, and both permits finaled that November.

Canoga Park roofs

  • Houses from around 1960. Median build year 1960; 80.0% of Canoga Park's 10,513 single-family homes were built before 1978.
  • Pitched and low-slope together. On our 2024 Canoga Park re-roof a pitched shingle field met two low-slope sections; we priced and built them as the two different jobs they are.
  • The cool-roof rule. Canoga Park is in the City of Los Angeles, so a full re-roof needs a product rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council, and the rating is per color. The cool-roof rule
  • One permit office. LADBS permits Canoga Park roofs; a few homes in ZIP code 91304 sit outside the city and go through LA County.

A grey roof that passes the rule

On our 2024 Canoga Park project the owner wanted a grey roof. We checked the color against the cool-roof requirement before ordering, and none of the greys in the first shingle line cleared the reflectance threshold, so we moved to a cool-rated line with a grey that did. On the two low-slope sections only one torch-down product complied, and we told the owner in writing, when the contract was signed, that its color would not match the shingle. When the tear-off showed the deck needed replacing, it was replaced and a supplemental permit put through so the permit described the work done, and a drone survey documented every plane after completion.

Tile lifted and reset

Tile can outlive the underlayment beneath it. On our 2026 Canoga Park project we priced a full re-roof and a tile reset side by side, and the job went ahead as a reset. Twenty-six squares of tile came off, new underlayment went down, and the same tile went back, with replacement tile, ridge cap and rake ordered in advance and color-matched from physical samples. The solar went on the reset roof, and LADWP granted permission to operate on 20 March 2026. Tile roof repair

Roofing questions for Canoga Park

Can I have a grey roof under the cool-roof rule?

Yes, in a cool-rated grey. On our 2024 Canoga Park re-roof the first line had no qualifying grey, so we used a cool-rated line in grey; we check the color before ordering.

Do you replace roofs without solar?

Yes. Our 2024 Canoga Park re-roof had no solar on it: eighteen squares of shingle, two low-slope sections and a new deck, with both permits finaled.

Does a tile roof have to be replaced before solar?

Not when the tile is sound. On our 2026 Canoga Park project the tile was lifted, new underlayment laid, the same tile reset, and the solar installed on it.
