Main panel upgrade in Santa Clarita, CA
Cali Energy upgrades main electrical panels in Santa Clarita for solar, batteries and new units: a 125-amp panel replaced with a 225-amp service, a dedicated 200-amp service for an ADU, a main panel upgrade under a whole-home battery, and a stucco wall finished to the inspector's satisfaction after the panel change. Fifty of our projects are in Santa Clarita's ZIP codes.
In Santa Clarita the City of Santa Clarita issues a main panel upgrade permit instantly online for qualifying residential work; Stevenson Ranch, Castaic and the other unincorporated areas go through LA County Public Works. Southern California Edison reviews the changed service and reconnects it. Cali Energy has run five Santa Clarita panel projects through that path, and on a sixth checked a proposed derate against the panel and found the busbar was already rated 225 amps, so no derate was needed.

How Santa Clarita handles a panel upgrade
- The permit. For addresses inside the city, the City of Santa Clarita Building & Safety issues qualifying residential solar, storage and main panel upgrade permits instantly online; since May 1, 2026 they run through Symbium as MEP permits. Stevenson Ranch, Castaic, Agua Dulce and Val Verde are unincorporated and go through LA County Public Works.
- The utility. SCE reviews the changed service, sets the meter and, with solar, grants permission to operate. For the 2,443 residential systems approved in Santa Clarita from January 2025 to March 2026, the median from SCE receiving the application to approving it was 44 days.
- The houses. Santa Clarita's 60,977 single-family homes have a median build year of 1989; a quarter date from before 1978. On our 2021 project here the panel was 125 amps, which is where the busbar question starts.
- Batteries are the norm here. Of the 2,443 residential solar systems SCE approved in Santa Clarita from January 2025 to March 2026, 87.1% included a battery. A battery needs the service to accept its connection.
Derate, new panel or checked and left alone
The code caps the main breaker plus the solar breaker at 120% of the busbar rating. On our Santa Clarita project from the winter of 2021–22, a revised plan proposed dropping the main breaker to 175 amps; we checked the panel, found the busbar rated 225 amps, and the stamped set went to a final in January with no derate. On another, a 125-amp panel could not take an 8.14 kW array under the standard rule, so a 225-amp service went into the design. Derate, new panel or service upgrade · The derate that was not needed
The wall after the panel
Replacing a main panel is not only an electrical job: the old enclosure comes off a wall it was set into, and on stucco the result cannot be patched invisibly by whoever did the wiring. On our 2021 Santa Clarita project the upgrade was quoted with the stucco work identified as its own line, the solar and the service upgrade passed at the end of June, and the inspector came back to see the wall finished before signing in the first week of July.
