Do Solar Panels Work at Night?

Straight answer: no. Solar panels need sunlight, so after dark they produce essentially no usable power — moonlight is far too weak to run the system. Why panels stop at night

A solar panel makes electricity when photons from sunlight knock electrons loose in its cells. No sunlight, no meaningful current. Moonlight is just sunlight reflected off the moon — a tiny fraction of the intensity, not enough to push the inverter past its start-up threshold and make usable AC power for your home. So from dusk to dawn a panel effectively produces nothing. It ramps up at sunrise, peaks at midday, and fades at sunset.

So how do I have power at night?

Two ways, and many homes use both:

A battery

During the day your panels often make more than you use. A home battery stores that surplus and then powers your home after sunset. This is the only way to run on your own solar at night.

The grid

A grid-tied home without a battery simply imports electricity from the utility at night. Your daytime exports earn credits toward those imports — how much depends on your tariff, not on the panels.

Net metering is not a power source

This trips people up. Net metering and the Net Billing Tariff (NEM 3.0) are billing methods — they set the rules for how your daytime exports and nighttime imports are credited. They don’t send power to your house at night. The electrons you use after dark come from a battery or the grid; the tariff just does the accounting. So “my panels power me at night through net metering” isn’t quite right — the grid powers you, and the tariff credits it.

WHY THE BATTERY MATTERS MORE NOW

Under NEM 3.0, store it — don’t export it

On SCE, PG&E and SDG&E, the Net Billing Tariff pays a low, time-varying credit for the solar you export at midday, while power you import at night costs the full retail rate. That gap is a major reason a battery can improve solar economics under the Net Billing Tariff: instead of exporting cheap noon power and buying expensive night power, you store your own and use it after dark. What about a grid-tied system with no battery?

It works fine — at night it just buys from the utility like any home. The one catch: in a blackout, a grid-tied system without a battery shuts off for safety (it can’t back-feed a line crews may be working on), so it won’t power you during an outage either, day or night.
