Hardwired vs. plug-in (NEMA 14-50)

There are two ways to connect a Level 2 charger, and the right one depends on your unit and your setup.

Plug-in (NEMA 14-50 outlet). The electrician installs a 240-volt outlet and you plug the charger in. It's flexible — you can unplug or swap the unit — but under the current NEC a 14-50 receptacle generally requires GFCI protection at the breaker, which costs more and can occasionally nuisance-trip with a charger that already has its own ground-fault sensing.

Hardwired. The charger is wired directly to the circuit — no outlet. This is required for 48A+ units (a 50A outlet caps you at 40A), tends to be the cleaner outdoor and weather-exposed choice, and with GFCI-breaker prices factored in it's now often cost-competitive with a plug-in. For a permanent home charger, most installs we do are hardwired.

40A vs. 48A: amperage and the NEC 80% rule

How fast you charge is set by the charger's amperage — and by a code rule that quietly sizes your whole circuit.

EV charging is a continuous load (it can run at full current for 3+ hours), so the NEC requires the circuit and breaker to be rated at 125% of the charger's continuous draw — the flip side of the well-known 80% rule: a charger should draw no more than 80% of the circuit's rating. In practice:

A 48A charger delivers about 11.5 kW — roughly 20% faster than a 40A unit — but it demands a 60A circuit, heavier wire, and a hardwired connection, so it costs a bit more to install and eats more of your panel's capacity. Many households charge overnight and never need more than 32–40A. Final wire and breaker sizing depend on the applicable NEC edition, wire type, and distance, and on your inspector's review.

Does your electrical panel have room?

Adding a 40–60A circuit is a real load. If your panel is full (no open slots) or under-capacity (an older 100A service already running AC, oven, and dryer), you may need a subpanel or a main-panel upgrade before the charger goes in. That's the biggest single swing in the whole quote. An EV charger is a load on your service, so it's evaluated with a load calculation — different from solar or an exporting battery, which is a source and triggers separate backfeed limits. What drives your installation price

Two homes on the same street can get very different quotes. Here's what moves the number.

Distance to the panel

A charger a few feet from the panel is the cheap case. Every extra foot of wire and conduit — especially across finished walls or to a detached garage — adds labor and material.

Panel capacity & free slots

A modern 200A panel with open slots keeps it simple. A full or older 100A panel may need a subpanel or a main-panel upgrade — the single largest cost driver.

Charger amperage

A 48A hardwired unit needs a 60A circuit and heavier conductors (the exact size is the electrician’s call per NEC); a 32–40A unit is lighter and cheaper to feed. Faster isn't always necessary for overnight charging.

Indoor vs. outdoor / trenching

An outdoor or detached-garage location needs weather-rated equipment and sometimes trenching, which adds meaningfully to the total.

Hardwired vs. plug-in

A GFCI breaker for a NEMA 14-50 outlet adds cost; hardwiring avoids it. The gap is smaller than it used to be.

Permit & inspection

A home EV circuit requires a permit and a passed inspection. A licensed contractor handles both — skipping it risks insurance and resale problems.

Permit, inspection, and doing it right

Southern California utilities have offered EV incentives, but these programs change often, run on limited funds, and carry eligibility rules — so treat any figure as a starting point to verify, not a guarantee.

As examples we've seen recently: LADWP has offered up to $1,000 toward a qualifying Level 2 charger plus $250 for a dedicated EV meter (more for income-eligible customers), and SCE's Charge Ready Home has offered rebates aimed at panel upgrades for income-qualified households. The federal 30C residential charger credit expired for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, so a new install generally can't claim it — confirm current terms directly. Always check the utility's own program page for the amount, eligibility, and whether funds are open before you sign.
