EV charger installation in Glendale, CA

Cali Energy installs Level 2 EV chargers in Glendale on their own or together with solar. On one Glendale house the charger went on the wall beside the inverter on the day the solar went in, nearly three years before the family bought an electric car, and when the car came we returned to connect it.

In Glendale an EV charger is electrical work under a City of Glendale permit, and it can also change how much solar Glendale Water & Power allows: above 10 kW AC the utility sizes a net-metered system at 110% of the past year's usage and adds 4,375 kWh a year for each electric vehicle registered at the address. On our 2023 Glendale project that allowance carried a 20.8 kW array through the utility's review. On another, the charger, the inverter and a trench under the walkway all went in on one day in 2022.

What an EV charger needs in Glendale

  • A dedicated circuit. The breaker is sized at 125% of the charger's current, the wire to the breaker, and a 48-amp charger is hardwired. Circuit sizes and the 125% rule
  • Room in the panel. A load calculation shows whether the main panel can carry the charger; where it cannot, the panel upgrade runs through Glendale Water & Power's service spot and the city's electrical permit. Main panel upgrades in Glendale
  • A permit and an inspection from the City of Glendale.

The charger before the car

A charger needs a circuit, a conduit run and wall space, and on a solar job all three are already open. On our 2022 Glendale project the arrays, a single rooftop conduit run over the ridges, ten feet of trench cut through the concrete walkway, the inverter and a matching charger beside it were all installed on 15 November, and the final inspection passed on 14 December. The charger hung ready on the wall until July 2025, when the family bought an electric car and we came back to connect and set it up.

An electric car can size the solar

Glendale Water & Power will not approve a net-metered system above 10 kW AC whose estimated production exceeds 110% of the past twelve months' usage, and it adds 4,375 kWh a year for each electric vehicle registered at the address. On our 2023 Glendale project we carried the application through that review with the household's two vehicle registrations, the utility approved a 52-module, 20.8 kW array, and the generation meter was set in August 2023. The utility said the array was too big for the house.

A 20.8 kW array approved with the utility's allowance of 4,375 kWh a year for each registered electric vehicle; permission to operate in August 2023.

How a charger installation runs in Glendale

  1. Panel and route. A load calculation on the main panel, and the run from the panel to the parking spot, including any trench.
  2. Charger and circuit chosen together: setting, breaker, wire, hardwired or outlet.
  3. City permit, filed by us.
  4. Installation under our C-10 electrical license, scheduled with the solar when both go in.
  5. Inspection, and the charger set up with your car.
