The story

Cali Energy upgraded this Sunland home's electrical service with a two-position meter assembly, new distribution equipment and an overhead service mast: the point where the house takes power from the grid, and everything between that point and the circuits inside.

The meter assembly carries two meter positions, so the property can have two separately metered supplies from one service. Beside it is a new main panel, and a second panel is set into an opening cut in the stucco.

The service mast through the roof, weather head on top.

The overhead conductors come in at a mast that runs up through the roof and ends in a weather head, the hooded fitting that keeps rain out of the conduit where the wires enter. Where the mast passes through the roof it is flashed. That roof was itself new: the house is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and when the roof was replaced the summer before, LADBS required a Class A covering.

The service work also covered bonding, which connects the house's metal piping to the service's grounding system. Here a bare copper bonding conductor was clamped onto the piping at the base of the wall.

The outside work was finished on 24 January and the final inspection was requested with LADBS for Tuesday 28 January. In February the work continued inside the house, with the walls open and circuits run through the framing in flexible metal conduit.

Cali Energy in Sunland

Sunland is a neighborhood inside the City of Los Angeles: permits run through LADBS, interconnection through LADWP.

Parts of Sunland lie in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and LADBS writes it into the permit: a roof replaced there must be Class A. This house had its roof replaced with a Class A covering the summer before.

Frequently asked questions

What did the service upgrade on this Sunland house include?

A meter assembly with two meter positions, a new main panel, a second panel set into the wall, a service mast through the roof with a weather head, and a bonding conductor clamped to the metal piping. No solar was involved, and the final inspection was booked with LADBS for the Tuesday after the work.

What is bonding in a service upgrade?

Bonding connects the house's metal piping to the electrical service's grounding system. On this house a bare copper bonding conductor was clamped onto the piping at the base of the wall as part of the permitted service work, and it is part of what the final inspection looks at.

Why did the roof here have to be Class A?

The house is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and the LADBS permit for the roof replacement the summer before required a Class A roof covering there. The new service mast passes through that roof, so it was flashed into the new covering.
