Solar panel installation in Sunland, CA

Cali Energy installs solar panels in Sunland and does the electrical work that connects them. Our projects here include 25 modules over several faces of a hip roof, connected through a permitted main-breaker de-rate, and a 2024 system whose virtual final went ahead after the inspector's video call failed.

Sunland lies inside the City of Los Angeles, which makes LADBS the permit office and LADWP the utility; its ZIP code, 91040, also covers Shadow Hills. On our 2024 Sunland project the array went on in one day on 2 May, and LADBS approved the final on 13 May, releasing the service to LADWP. Cali Energy, a solar installer licensed under CSLB #1032379, puts in the panels and the electrical work that goes with them.

Sunland homes

  • Sunland and Shadow Hills. ZIP code 91040 covers both, under the postal name Sunland; either way the house is in the City of Los Angeles, permitted by LADBS and served by LADWP.
  • Mostly mid-century. In ZIP code 91040, 70.3% of the 5,764 single-family homes on the LA County Assessor roll were built before 1960, and half by 1953.
  • Re-roofs. Between January 2025 and May 2026, LADBS permitted 93 re-roofs of houses and duplexes in the part of the Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood council area inside ZIP code 91040. Roofing
  • Existing panels. On two of our Sunland houses the solar connected to the panel already there: once after a permitted de-rate of the main breaker, once at a breaker position the panel reserves for solar.

Solar across several roof faces, with a permitted main-breaker de-rate

25 modules in groups over several roof faces, some on tilt legs over a low-slope section, and the main breaker de-rated on a separate electrical permit; commissioned on 22 January 2026, all 25 optimizers reporting.

A virtual final, and the inspector could not connect

Nineteen modules on two roof faces, installed on 2 May 2024; the virtual final was rebooked when the inspector's call failed, and LADBS approved it and released the service to LADWP on 13 May.

Nine modules, and a breaker position reserved for solar

Nine modules in groups of five and four, connected through a wall disconnect at the breaker position the panel's label reserves for solar; installed in one day, 23 July 2025.

Keeping the existing panel

For the 25-module system in December 2025, connecting at the existing main panel meant de-rating its main breaker, and that took a separate electrical permit, which we pulled; at commissioning on 22 January 2026 all 25 optimizers were reporting. On the nine-module house in July 2025 the panel needed nothing: its label reserves one breaker position for solar or PV input in California, and the array came in there through a disconnect on the wall. Which route a panel allows is for a licensed electrician to judge, from its rating and a load calculation. Main panel upgrades

When the virtual final fails

LADBS offers the final as a video inspection once the participation agreement is signed. On our May 2024 Sunland job the inspector's video call on 9 May never connected. We asked LADBS for another slot that same morning and got Saturday the 11th; on 13 May the final was approved and the service release went to LADWP. Permit to PTO in Los Angeles

Sunland questions

Does Cali Energy install solar panels in Sunland?

Yes. Five of our Sunland projects are written up as case studies, among them four solar panel installations from 2024 to 2026. We design the system, pull the LADBS permits, including a separate one when the main breaker is de-rated, and do the panel work around it. Shadow Hills or Sunland: does it change the permit or the utility?

No. Both share ZIP code 91040 and both are in the City of Los Angeles, so LADBS issues the permit and LADWP connects the system either way.

Can solar connect without replacing the main panel?

On two of our Sunland houses it did: one after the main breaker was de-rated under its own electrical permit, one at a breaker position the panel's label reserves for solar. On your house, a licensed electrician settles which one applies.

What happens if the LADBS video inspection fails?

On our 2024 Sunland job the inspector could not connect, so we asked for a new slot that morning; the final was rebooked for two days later, and LADBS approved it and released the service to LADWP on 13 May.

How were the mounts sealed on a Sunland shingle roof?

On our October 2025 job each standoff went onto bolt holes packed with sealant, and its post was capped by a conical flashing tucked beneath the next shingle course up.

Planning solar in Sunland?

Send a photo of the roof from the yard, including any flat or low-slope section, and one of the main panel with its door open so the label is readable. From those we can tell whether the panel takes the solar as it is, with a de-rate, or needs replacing.
