How we mounted eleven panels on a Sunland shingle roof
Eleven 440 W modules on one shingle face. Each mount is a standoff: sealed fasteners, and a conical flashing tucked under the shingle course above.
This Sunland installation is 4.84 kW DC: eleven HD Hyundai 440 W modules, each with an Enphase IQ8MC microinverter, in a single group on a shingle roof. Cali Energy mounted it on standoffs. Each one combines sealed fasteners with a conical flashing tucked beneath the upper shingle course, and the rails bolt to the tops of the posts. The array was installed in one day in October 2025.

The story
Each standoff on this roof combines sealed fasteners with a conical flashing tucked beneath the upper shingle course. A standoff is a short aluminum post bolted down through the roof; the rails bolt to the tops of the posts, above the shingles.
Every standoff went in the same way. The shingle where the base sits was opened, the bolt holes were drilled and filled with sealant, and the base was bolted down. Then the conical flashing went over the post and up under the shingle course above it, so water running down the roof passes over the cone rather than into the holes.
With the posts in, the rails went across them and the microinverters onto the rails, one at each module position, wired before any module covered them. Then came the eleven modules, 440 W each, for 4.84 kW DC in a single group.
From the array the circuit runs down to an Enphase combiner and an AC disconnect on the wall. On a shingle roof the part that decides how the array ages is the part nobody sees afterwards: what is under each of the cones.
How it ran
| 8 October 2025 | Standoffs set, each sealed and flashed |
|---|---|
| 8 October 2025 | Rails and IQ8MC microinverters installed |
| 8 October 2025 | Eleven modules on; circuit to the combiner and disconnect |
Mounts, rails, modules and wiring, all in one day.
What we did
- Measured out the layout on the roof.
- Filled every bolt hole with sealant before the standoff bases went down.
- Slid a conical flashing over each post and under the shingle course above.
- Installed rails and an Enphase IQ8MC microinverter at each module position.
- Installed the eleven modules and ran the circuit to the wall.

Is your project like this one?
- You want to know how standoff mounts are sealed on a shingle roof.
- You are planning a system of around five kilowatts.
- You want a microinverter under every module.
- You live in Sunland or the foothill neighborhoods around it.
Cali Energy in Sunland
Sunland is a neighborhood inside the City of Los Angeles: permits run through LADBS, interconnection through LADWP.
Sunland sits in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, inside the City of Los Angeles. Many of its houses have composition shingle roofs, where every solar mount is a hole through the roof that has to be sealed and flashed.

Frequently asked questions
How were the standoff mounts sealed on this Sunland roof?
Each bolt hole was filled with sealant before the standoff base went down, and a conical flashing was slid over each post and up under the shingle course above it. The flashing sheds water running down the roof past the post, and the sealant fills the holes underneath.
What equipment is in this Sunland system?
Eleven HD Hyundai HiS-T440NF(BK) modules rated 440 W each, 4.84 kW DC in all, with an Enphase IQ8MC microinverter under every module, wired as a single group. The circuit runs down to an Enphase combiner and an AC disconnect on the wall.
Does Cali Energy install solar on shingle roofs in Sunland?
Yes. Sunland is inside the City of Los Angeles, with permits through LADBS and interconnection through LADWP. Cali Energy installs on shingle roofs here with sealed, flashed mounts and a microinverter under each module. License CSLB #1032379.
