Permitting: it’s a building structure, not just panels

This is the part homeowners underestimate — a carport or patio cover is reviewed as a structure.

Because it’s a new building, expect a building/structural permit in addition to the standard solar PV and electrical permits. Plans generally have to show the structure is engineered for the weight of the panels plus wind loads, with footings sized accordingly — often on stamped drawings.
