Home battery installation in Woodland Hills, CA

Cali Energy installs home batteries in Woodland Hills with new solar or on a system you already have. Two of the eleven Woodland Hills systems under our monitoring run with a battery, and our battery-first project here, an Enphase Encharge 10 behind 26 microinverters on an upgraded panel, has run with backup since permission to operate in May 2022.

In Woodland Hills a battery adds a third track to a solar project: LADBS inspects the work, LADWP interconnects the solar, and LADWP's storage group reviews the battery separately, with its own information sheets, site inspection and photographs. The battery also reaches back into the design, because one unit supports a fixed number of microinverters and the rest go on a branch shed during backup. Cali Energy designed, permitted and carried a Woodland Hills battery system through all three, and the house has run with battery backup since May 2022.

Why Woodland Hills homes add a battery

  • Backup for the heat. Woodland Hills is the hottest officially recorded spot in the county; the refrigerator, the air conditioning and the internet are what an outage takes first. Whole home or the circuits that matter
  • Evening use. LADWP credits exports at the retail rate, so a battery here is about backup first and about using your own afternoon production in the evening second. LADWP solar and battery incentives
  • Older solar. Systems installed around 2019 and 2020 are now old enough to want storage, and a string inverter from before about 2020 generally cannot charge a battery. Adding a battery to existing solar

What a battery changes in the design

A battery unit supports a fixed number of microinverters, nineteen for the model on our Woodland Hills project, and the roof carried twenty-six modules, so the surplus went onto its own branch that is disconnected during a backup event. The plan set became load-bearing: removing one feature from it would have changed what the battery could carry. The upgraded panel carried a 175-amp main, and the utility's storage track ran alongside the solar interconnection. The house has run with battery backup since permission to operate in May 2022.

Adding storage to solar you already have

On a Woodland Hills system from 2019 the inverter was working, and it still had to be replaced to charge a battery, because it was never built to. We priced that swap into the storage proposal openly, as part of the battery quote rather than the solar one. On any older system here the first question is the inverter, the second is the panel.

A battery decided how this Woodland Hills array was wired.

26 modules, 26 microinverters and one Enphase Encharge 10 on an upgraded panel with a 175-amp main; the array wired around the battery, running with backup since May 2022.

The array is fine. The inverter is what dates it.

A 2019 string inverter cannot charge a battery, so the storage proposal priced its replacement openly, as part of the battery quote; the array itself has run since 2019.

How a battery installation runs in Woodland Hills

  1. Site visit. Main panel, meter, the wall for the battery, and the circuits you want running in an outage.
  2. Design. Battery model and count, backup scope, how the array branches around the battery, placement with clearances on the plans.
  3. Permits with LADBS: the solar permit and, where the panel changes, the electrical permit.
  4. Installation under our C-10 electrical license.
  5. City final, then LADWP: the solar interconnection and, separately, the storage review with its information sheets, site inspection and photographs.
  6. Switch-on, with the backup reserve set and the app connected.

Battery questions for Woodland Hills

Does Cali Energy install home batteries in Woodland Hills?

Yes. Cali Energy designed, permitted and installed a battery-first Enphase system in Woodland Hills, carried it through LADBS and LADWP's separate storage review, and the house has run with battery backup since May 2022. Two of our eleven monitored Woodland Hills systems run with a battery. Tesla Powerwall Certified Installer, CSLB #1032379, based in Northridge; call +1-323-844-7777.

Does LADWP review a battery separately from the solar?

Yes. LADWP's storage group runs its own track, with information sheets, a site inspection and a photograph package, alongside the solar interconnection. A system can pass the city's final and still wait on that track; on our Woodland Hills project we carried both to permission to operate.

Can I add a battery to my older Woodland Hills solar?

Yes, and on a system from before about 2020 the string inverter will need replacing to charge it. On a 2019 Woodland Hills system we priced that replacement into the storage proposal openly.
