Cali Energy sizes and upgrades the electrical service for solar in Porter Ranch. On two Porter Ranch houses the array fit the existing panel with the main breaker derated to 175 amps; on one, the load calculation came out at 174.9 amps against that derate, and the alternative, a 200-amp sub panel, was set out in writing before the choice was made.
Porter Ranch's houses are newer than most of the Valley's: median build year 1977, with less than 8% built before 1960. On our 2023 and 2025 Porter Ranch projects the existing panel stayed: the main breaker was derated to 175 amps under the 120% rule rather than the panel replaced, and both projects ran through a homeowners association. On both, the association approved the layout before the permit, LADBS permitted the work, and LADWP connected it.
How a panel decision runs in Porter Ranch
- The 120% rule. The code caps the main breaker plus the solar breaker at 120% of the busbar rating. A derate brings the main breaker down so the solar breaker fits; a load calculation shows the house can live on it. Derate, new panel or service upgrade
- Options in writing. Where a derate sits close to the house's load, another route can be on the table, such as interconnecting at a sub panel. We set both out in writing before the choice is made.
- The association first. On our Porter Ranch projects the association approved the layout before the permit was pulled.
- The houses. Median build year 1977; 52.6% of Porter Ranch's 10,206 single-family homes were built before 1978.
A derate at 174.9 amps
On our 2025 Porter Ranch project the main breaker was derated to 175 amps, and the load calculation came out at 174.9 amps against it. The designer offered an alternative: upgrade the sub panel to a 200-amp bus with a 100-amp main and interconnect there. We took the derate, because the arithmetic fits and it keeps the house on one service panel, and both options were set out in writing first.
Sized from the bill, then derated
On our 2023 Porter Ranch project two production runs on the same array disagreed by about 1,250 kWh a year, so we checked the azimuth, the tilt and the shading rather than picking the better number, and sized the array against the household's actual 12,700 kWh a year. The design settled on twenty-four REC modules with a string inverter and a main breaker derated to 175 amps. The association approved the layout on 22 May, the installation followed four days later, the final passed on 7 June, and LADWP granted permission to operate on 20 June 2023.
