Porter Ranch, CA · February 2025 · LADWP / LADBS
Porter Ranch: an inverter replaced under warranty in year six.
Year six of a twelve-year warranty. The manufacturer shipped a new inverter, Cali Energy fitted it, and the monitoring picked up where it left off.
An inverter warranty covers the part for the manufacturer's full term. On this Porter Ranch system the inverter failed more than five years after installation and was replaced under that warranty, the hardware at no cost: Cali Energy handled the claim, fitted the replacement within a week and restored the monitoring with the production history intact.

The story
An inverter failed on a system in its sixth year. The claim was straightforward and the manufacturer shipped a replacement.
The work itself took a morning: old inverter off, replacement fitted, system restarted, monitoring re-registered so the production history continued rather than starting over.
Two things are worth taking from this.
The first is a question to ask before signing: how long is the labor covered, and by whom? Some installers add their own workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer's program, and the length of that is a real difference between two quotes that otherwise look identical.
The second is about expectations over the life of a system. Twenty-five years is long enough that something will be replaced. An inverter is the usual part to go, because it does the constant work of conversion. A system that has had one inverter replaced in its sixth year is not a bad system — it is a normal one, being maintained by somebody who is still around to maintain it.
The replacement went in on the twenty-seventh of February and the monitoring was reporting again the next morning with the production history intact. The array went back to work in its sixth year and has run since.
Cali Energy handled the warranty claim, fitted the replacement inverter and restored the monitoring on this Porter Ranch system.
How it ran

|---|---|
| 21 February 2025 | Replacement inverter to be shipped to our office |
| 27 February 2025 | Inverter replaced |
| 28 February 2025 | Monitoring restored on the new unit |
A week from claim to a running system, with the production history carried over.
What we did
- Opened the manufacturer claim and tracked the replacement to our office.
- Fitted the replacement and restarted the system the same week.
- Re-registered the monitoring so the history carried over instead of resetting.

Cali Energy in Porter Ranch
Porter Ranch is inside City of Los Angeles boundaries: permits run through LADBS and interconnection through LADWP. Arrays here are old enough now that the second decade of ownership is the interesting one.
This installation is on the Porter Ranch projects page alongside the others, and what the work covers is set out on the Porter Ranch service area page.

Frequently asked questions
How long do solar inverters last?
Most carry a warranty of around twelve years and many run longer, but the inverter is the component that most often gets replaced during the life of an array, because it works continuously converting power.
What should I ask about warranty before signing?
Two questions: how long the equipment is covered, and how long the labor is covered and by whom. An installer's own workmanship warranty sitting on top of the manufacturer's program is a genuine difference between quotes.
Will I lose my production history if the inverter is replaced?
Not if the new unit is registered against the existing monitoring site. Done properly, the history continues; done carelessly, the system appears in the app as if it were installed the day of the swap.
Does Cali Energy service systems it installed years ago in Porter Ranch?
Yes, including warranty claims on equipment that is no longer sold. Porter Ranch systems permit through LADBS and interconnect through LADWP, and a service visit needs neither of those — which is why an array installed years ago can still be looked after by the people who put it up.
