Three years later, the inverter stopped reporting.

An 8.19 kilowatt DC system on a Chatsworth house, installed in 2019 on LG modules and a single SolarEdge inverter. In autumn 2022 the monitoring went quiet.

Equipment carries a manufacturer warranty, but somebody has to raise the case, get the replacement approved and shipped, and go back and fit it. On this system the manufacturer logged the case as an inverter not producing, and the shipment that came back held both a replacement inverter and a ZigBee communications module.

The story

The system went on in 2019: twenty-six LG NEON 2 Black modules and one SolarEdge SE7600H inverter, 8.19 kilowatts DC on a single-family house. The plan set records something worth noting for anyone weighing up a service upgrade — neither a main panel upgrade nor a main breaker downgrade was required on this house.

Three years later the monitoring stopped showing production.

A string inverter is a single point of failure by design. Twenty-six modules feed one box, and when that box stops, the whole array stops. That is the trade for having one piece of electronics on the wall instead of twenty-six on the roof — the failure is total, but it is also in one accessible place at eye level rather than under a module.

We raised the case with the manufacturer, who logged it as an inverter not producing. The replacement was approved under warranty ten days later, and the shipment that arrived held two parts: a replacement SE7600H inverter and a ZigBee communications module. Both went in, and the old inverter went back to the manufacturer under a return label.

The useful part of this one is not dramatic. Equipment carries a warranty, and the warranty is only worth what the process behind it is worth: somebody has to notice, open the case, chase the approval, take delivery and come back out. Three years after the money changed hands is exactly when that gets tested.

With a single string inverter the whole array stops, because every module feeds that one box. The equipment carries a manufacturer warranty; the work is opening the case, getting the replacement approved and shipped, fitting it and returning the old unit. Is a string inverter riskier than microinverters?
