A one-day installation is not a fast crew. It is a project where everything that can stop work was settled first: an approved plan set in hand, material ordered against that plan rather than after it, one clear roof plane, no service panel work, and an inspection slot booked for the day the array finishes. Remove any one of those and the same array takes a week.

The story

The plan set arrived on the seventh of January. The array went on the nineteenth. The inspection was requested the same afternoon, and the closed inspection card with a full photo record went out on the twenty-second. Twelve days, of which one was spent on the roof.

What makes that possible is not speed on the day. It is the list of things that were already true when the truck arrived.

An approved plan set in hand, not in review. Material ordered against that plan set — modules, rail, mounts, flashings, conduit, the inverter — and delivered before the date rather than chased during it. A roof with one clear plane and no obstruction to design around. No service panel work, which is the single biggest reason a solar project turns into two visits. And an inspection request filed the moment the work was done rather than the following week.

The work itself is ordinary and worth describing precisely, because ordinary done properly is the whole product. Mounts land on rafters, located by measurement rather than guesswork. Each one gets a flashing that goes under the shingle course above it. Rails go on, then modules, then the wiring is dressed and supported rather than left hanging. Where the conduit passes through the roof, the penetration is flashed and sealed.

Downstairs, the SolarEdge string inverter and its disconnect go on the wall by the garage, beside the existing service equipment, with the labels the inspection will look for. Nothing about that placement is accidental either: it keeps the DC run short and puts the shutdown where somebody responding to an emergency can find it.

Then the paperwork that ends the job. The inspection card is the document that records each required inspection and its sign-off, and a closed card is what actually says the work is accepted — not a handshake, not an invoice marked paid. Cali Energy sent it to the owner with the photo record on the twenty-second.

The counterweight: a one-day install is not evidence of a good one, and the parts that take time do not get faster because the schedule is tight. Lag screws still have to land in rafters. Flashings still have to sit under the course above, not on top of it. Conduit still has to be supported at code spacing and labeled. If a crew is off the roof in six hours, the question to ask is which of those things was checked, not how quickly they left.

And the other side of the same coin: if your project needs a service panel rebuild, a tile roof or three separate planes, no amount of preparation makes it a one-day job, and a contractor promising one is quoting the easy version of your house.

So the question before installation day: is the plan set approved, is every part on the truck, and is the inspection booked? If any of those is no, the date on the calendar is a hope, not a schedule.
