Main panel upgrade in Calabasas, CA

Cali Energy replaces main electrical panels in Calabasas when solar outgrows them. On both of our Calabasas panel projects a new 200-amp panel went into the stucco at the existing meter location, once in place of a planned derate and once up from a 100-amp service under a new roof.

In Calabasas a new panel needs Southern California Edison to accept the meter location as well as a permit from the City of Calabasas Building and Safety Division, which comes after the Planning Division's zoning clearance where the solar needs one. On our 2022 Calabasas project SCE approved the existing meter location on 9 August, the new panel went in two days later, both finals passed on 22 August, and SCE's permission to operate followed on 16 September 2022. Cali Energy, a licensed electrical and solar contractor (CSLB #1032379), handles the city, SCE and the installation.

How a panel job runs in Calabasas

  • SCE accepts the meter location. Before a new panel goes in, SCE approves where the meter will sit; on both of our Calabasas projects it accepted the existing location, in August 2022 and in December 2022.
  • City permits, in order. Where the solar needs a zoning clearance, the Planning Division signs it before Building and Safety reviews the plans. The panel went on its own electrical permit in 2022 and on a combined solar and panel permit in 2023.
  • A derate needs numbers behind it. Plan check asked for the load calculation supporting a 175-amp derate, and we sent it the same afternoon.
  • Newer houses, smaller services than you would think. The median Calabasas house dates from 1987 (5,924 single-family homes, LA County Assessor), and one of ours still ran on a 100-amp service.
  • Batteries. Nine in ten new Calabasas systems come with one: SCE approved 186 at Calabasas addresses between January 2025 and March 2026, and 91.9% had a battery. Home battery backup

A new panel in place of a derate

A returning Calabasas customer added eight modules of the same model to the house's array, bringing it to thirty-one and 10.54 kW. The plans derated the main breaker to 175 amps, and the permit followed on 14 July 2022, three days after the zoning clearance. In August, once SCE had accepted a 200-amp panel at the existing meter location on the overhead service and the panel permit was issued, the homeowner chose a new panel over the derate: it went into an opening in the stucco on 11 August, the solar permit was reissued for the new panel, and both finals passed on 22 August. permission to operate came from SCE on 16 September, 25 days after the finals.

From 100 to 200 amps under a new roof

On a Calabasas house running on a 100-amp service, SCE confirmed in December 2022 that the meter could stay where it was with a new panel behind it. The roof was rebuilt first, and on 19 April 2023 the 100-amp panel was replaced by a 200-amp one at the same spot while twenty-four modules went on. The final passed on 1 May, and SCE's permission to operate followed by 26 June 2023. Roofing
