Solar panel installation in Calabasas, CA

Cali Energy installs solar panels in Calabasas and does the roofing and electrical work around them. On our three Calabasas houses that meant an array on a new flat roof, a re-roof with a 200-amp panel upgrade, and a new panel in place of a derate when eight modules were added to an existing system.

A Calabasas house is permitted by one of two offices: the City of Calabasas, where the Planning Division can require a zoning clearance before Building and Safety issues the solar permit, or Los Angeles County for homes with a Calabasas address outside the city. Southern California Edison connects the system, and the power is bought through Clean Power Alliance. Cali Energy, a solar contractor licensed under CSLB #1032379, has taken Calabasas solar projects through both offices to a passed final.

Calabasas homes

  • Two permit offices. Inside the city, the City of Calabasas Building and Safety Division issues the permits, and on some projects the Planning Division's zoning clearance comes first. The 939 homes in ZIP code 91302 that carry a Calabasas address outside the city limits are permitted by Los Angeles County.
  • SCE and Clean Power Alliance. Southern California Edison delivers the power and connects the system; the city joined Clean Power Alliance in 2019, with 100% Green Power as its default plan, and the county areas are in Clean Power Alliance too.
  • Newer houses. On the LA County Assessor roll, the city's 5,924 single-family homes have a median build year of 1987, and 36.5% were built before 1978.
  • Batteries. Of the 186 residential systems SCE approved at Calabasas addresses from January 2025 to March 2026, 91.9% included a battery, and the median system was 11.8 kW. Home batteries

Our Calabasas projects

Calabasas city permits: planning first

On our 2022 Calabasas project the Planning Division's zoning clearance came on 11 July, and Building and Safety issued the solar permit three days later; both finals passed on 22 August. That house also got a new 200-amp panel in place of a derate, set out on our Calabasas main panel upgrade page.

A new roof, then the array

On our 2023 Calabasas project the re-roof permit followed the homeowner's permit for a rooftop condenser. The deck was replaced and a cool-roof shingle laid before twenty-four modules went on on 19 April; the final passed on 1 May, and the SCE application, filed on 14 March, was approved under NEM 2. A Calabasas address in the county

For a new house with a Calabasas address in unincorporated county, the solar permit came from Los Angeles County. We set every standoff in a sealant-filled curb before the roofer coated the flat roof, came back once the coating had dried for forty-five modules on 15-inch tilt legs, connected at the main panel because the garage subpanel had no room, and the final passed on 12 May 2021.
