Twenty modules on a roof replaced six months earlier

The shingle roof was replaced in the spring of 2024. In November twenty modules went on it, and every hole through the new shingles was sealed before it was covered.

This Mission Hills installation is 8.0 kW DC: twenty Hyundai HiS-S400YH(BK) 400 W modules, each with an Enphase IQ8M microinverter, wired in two branches of ten to an Enphase IQ Combiner 4. Cali Energy installed it over two days in November 2024 on a composition shingle roof replaced that spring — a 24-square re-roof finaled on 6 May 2024. The solar breaker went into the service panel at the slot labeled for future solar.

The story

The roof here was replaced in the spring of 2024. The LADBS record shows a re-roof of 24 squares over the existing sheathing, issued on 25 April and finaled on 6 May. Six months later, in November, the solar went on top of it. Doing the roof first is the order set out in replacing the roof before solar.

On a roof that new, every penetration matters. Each mount went in on a flashing slid under the shingle course above, and the conduit that brings the circuits down from the array goes through the roof on its own flashed fitting, with sealant laid in rings across the underside of the flashing before it went down.

The work ran over two days, 21 and 22 November. Twenty Hyundai 400 W panels went on, 8.0 kW DC, each with an Enphase IQ8M microinverter under it, wired in two branches of ten to an Enphase IQ Combiner 4 on the wall.

In the service panel, the solar breaker, a 40-amp two-pole, went into the slot beside the labels that read for future solar electric. The panel had been set up with a place for it.

What we did

  • Set every mount on a flashing under the shingle course above.
  • Sealed the conduit flashing before it went through the roof.
  • Installed twenty modules with a microinverter under each.
  • Wired the array in two branches of ten to an IQ Combiner 4.
  • Put the solar breaker in the panel slot labeled for future solar.

Is your project like this one?

  • You have just replaced your roof, or plan to before solar.
  • You are planning a system of around eight kilowatts.
  • You want a microinverter under every module.
  • Your service panel already has a slot marked for solar.

Cali Energy in Mission Hills

Mission Hills is a neighborhood inside the City of Los Angeles: permits run through LADBS, interconnection through LADWP.

Mission Hills is inside the City of Los Angeles, so a re-roof there is an LADBS permit, with the square count and the date the work was finaled on record.

Frequently asked questions

How old was the roof under this Mission Hills array?

About six months. The re-roof, 24 squares under an LADBS permit, was issued on 25 April 2024 and finaled on 6 May 2024. The solar was installed on 21 and 22 November 2024.

How were the penetrations through the new shingles handled?

Each mount sits on a flashing slid under the shingle course above it. The conduit that brings the circuits down from the array goes through the roof on its own flashed fitting, and sealant was laid in rings across the underside of that flashing before it went down.

What equipment is in this Mission Hills system?

Twenty Hyundai HiS-S400YH(BK) modules rated 400 W, 8.0 kW DC, each with an Enphase IQ8M microinverter. The microinverters are wired in two branches of ten to an Enphase IQ Combiner 4, and the solar breaker is a 40-amp two-pole in the service panel.

Does Cali Energy install solar on new roofs in Mission Hills?
