How to read your result
A full score means the proposal covers the right things on paper — not that the roof is sound or the crew will execute well. The unticked items are precisely where leaks start, so treat each open item as something to get in writing before you sign. If your roof is old, the single most important step is deciding whether to re-roof before the panels go on.
What moves the result the most
Roof age is the big one: panels typically outlive a roof that’s already 15–20 years old, and pulling an array to re-roof later is expensive. After that, the flashing/sealing method and a real workmanship warranty separate a clean install from a future leak. Fasteners into structure (not just sheathing) round it out.
Common questions
Do solar panels cause roof leaks?
Rarely, when installed well — leaks trace back to poor flashing, wrong fasteners, or mounting on a worn-out roof. Good flashing and proper lag placement are what prevent them.
What should be in writing before I sign?
The roof’s assessed condition, the flashing/sealing method for each penetration, that lags go into rafters, and a workmanship warranty that explicitly covers roof leaks and for how long.
Does my roof’s age matter?
A lot. If the roof is near end-of-life, it’s usually cheaper to re-roof before installing than to remove and reinstall the array later. Many installers won’t warranty over an old roof.

What’s a workmanship warranty?

Should I re-roof first?
If your roof has under ~10–15 years of life left, usually yes. Otherwise you risk paying to remove and reinstall the system mid-life. Weigh it before committing.
